Nancie, I fire my greenware to witness cone 04. If I fire it the automatic kiln, just set the controlls to 04, medium rate with a 30 minute hold. This produces a perfectly bent witness cone, tip bent to shelf. If I fire in a manual kiln, I follow the manufactures instructions, per my manual, but take longer to turn up the switches. This also produces a perfectly bent 04 cone. What type of kiln are you firing in? I do suggest that you do all your underglazing on greenware, if you are using a clay based product, before you fire it. If you are using underglazes for bisque,i.e. concepts, funstrokes or stroke n coats, then you would have to fire the piece first. Be careful how you use the word underglaze, it can make a big difference in how you apply the product and what your end results will be. Don't be afraid to try anything, the more things you try in ceramics, the more experience you will achieve. Char
